The USA PATRIOT (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) Act and the final rules issued by the U.S. Department of Treasury passed in October 2001, require U.S. financial institutions to put in place stringent compliance programs related to foreign banks that maintain correspondent relationships with them.
